Electrical Safety Officer

Perform electrical safety activities to support the NREL mission and ensure safe execution of electrical work activities. This position will support all of NRELs directorates and work within the ESH&Q office. This position will perform various tasks such as electrical code inspection, equipment inspections, electrical work practice risk assessments, and provide electrical safety training to NREL qualified electrical workers.
Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
Related Electrical engineer, electrical engineering technician, occupational safety and health, systems engineer, or business management Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience. Or, related Electrical engineer, electrical engineering technician, occupational safety and health, systems engineer, or business management Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience. Or, related Electrical engineer, electrical engineering technician, occupational safety and health, systems engineer, or business management PhD or equivalent related education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Under minimum engineering supervision, provides electrical safety technical guidance to support facilities maintenance, construction and research lab operations.
Provide technical assistance to internal organizations as well as external contractors in executing NREL's Lab Level Procedures for electrical safety.
Perform assessments with internal organizations to identify electrical safety violations, including participating in safety inspections.
Implement internal procedures to qualify equipment that has not been tested by a Nationally Recognized Test Laboratory (NRTL).
Perform electrical inspections of new construction, equipment modifications, and lab experiments.
Maintains the SKM file on arc flash analysis for laboratory and facilities electrical systems.
Performs electrical hazard identification and control including shock and incident energy calculations.
Make electrical safety/arc flash labels and install them on electrical equipment.
Develop and execute electrical worker safety training for NREL staff, contractors, and vendors as directed by the NREL electrical AHJ.
Serve as an Electrical Safety Officer per the NREL Electrical Safety Panel charter.
Actively participates on NREL's Electrical Safety Panel.
Participate, guide, direct, and write switching/LOTO electrical procedures in support of lab and facilities requirements and projects.
Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines.
Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs including MS Office, File Maker Pro, SKM Arc Flash Hazard Analysis, etc.
Working knowledge of electrical related NFPA safety codes with expert knowledge of –
NFPA 70 National Electric Code
NFPA 70B Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance
NFPA 70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace
NFPA 79 Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery
NFPA 791 Recommended Practice and Procedures for Unlabeled Electrical Equipment Evaluation
Certified Electrical Inspector or able to obtain within first year of employment
NFPA Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional or able to obtain within first year of employment
Working knowledge of OSHA 1910. Minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical construction, electrical maintenance, electronics, electrical inspection or electrical safety oversight.
Ability to use SKM software or other arc flash analysis tools
Engineer training or experience working in an engineering organization
Medium voltage experience
Industrial controls experience
External involvement in safety related committees and organization
