The National Wind Technology Center is seeking a qualified candidate to help execute a project related to the design and analysis of floating wind systems in a control co-design (CCD) environment. The position’s primary responsibilities include running and analyzing floating wind system simulations working with the CCD team for structural optimization. This work will involve using a range of existing tools, possibly creating new tools, and applying various mechanical and offshore engineering principles toward the understanding of floating wind system performance. The successful candidate will use control code design to create favorable conditions for both floating platforms and wind turbines. Coupling controls and platform design will be integrated to optimize conditions for the entire structure.
The overarching goal of the work is to identify parameters of the floating system that will lower the cost of energy. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with other NREL staff, academic institutions, and certification agency to contribute in research in the area of an ultra-flexible floating platform. The candidate can expect to publish research results in technical journals/conference proceedings and present work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings.
Preference is for a PhD candidate but master’s and bachelor’s students will also be considered.
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications
Excellent writing, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Prior experience relating to offshore system design, analysis, or modeling.
Experience in numerical simulation for engineering analysis.
Proficiency in wind turbine simulation tools and Python scripting.
Experience with offshore wind turbine simulation tools (e.g. OpenFAST, Bladed, HAWC2).
Experience with mooring simulation tools (e.g. OrcaFlex and MoorDyn).
Experience with floating wind system design and analysis.
Experience with optimization theory and application.
