Job Description

The National Wind Technology Center is seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher to work in the area of wind farm control systems. The researcher will work together with wind energy control research engineers in the design, analysis and validation of wind farm control concepts such as wake steering.

The researcher will design and analyze wind farm control techniques using both engineering models, such as FLORIS, as well as high-fidelity CFD models such as SOWFA. They will will propose new methods for achieving improved plant performance and carry out analysis of the proposed methods.

This researcher will also collaborate on field validation campaigns where wake steering controllers are implemented at full-scale wind farms and the performance of the campaign is analyzed. They will assist in designing these experiments, in performing the campaign, in conducting the analysis, and in reporting the findings.

This researcher is expected to demonstrate a broad understanding and wide application of engineering principles, theories and concepts as well as general knowledge of wind energy related disciplines and applications. The researcher will work with a variety of customers including the US Department of Energy wind energy technology office. They will also work collaboratively with other national laboratories, industry and the international community and execute wind energy related engineering projects worldwide.

The successful candidate will have excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills. In addition, they will be expected to help publish results in technical journals/conference proceedings and present work at conferences, symposia, and sponsor review meetings. They will also be expected to support the development of new work proposals, preparations, and reviews.


Basic Qualifications

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in wind energy, wind farm control systems and/or fluid dynamics.

  • The preferred candidate will also have experience with wind energy modeling tools FLORIS/FAST/SOWFA and have experience in programming, particularly python.

  • Understanding of, and practice in statistical analysis of large data sets, or experience with programming for such analysis, is valued.
