As a member of the Integrated Devices and Systems (IDS) research staff within the Power System Engineering Center (PSEC) the successful candidate will conduct high-quality research in the area of the dynamics of power-electronic grid interfaces and specialized power-electronic interface controls to improve/maintain grid stability, fault response/clearing, grid synchronization, operation of 100% inverter-based grids, etc. The types of models of interest include transient-type models (could be considered to be very high-fidelity dynamic models as well) of power systems with high-levels of inverter-based generation with and without grid forming capability. The development of these models likely requires a high-level of expertise of modeling in MATLAB/Simulink and/or efficient programming languages to enable a large-scale, high-fidelity modeling platform.
The successful candidate is expected to fully participate in the IDS team and other relevant teams within PSEC and grid integration activities at the Flatirons Campus as well. Being able to work on multiple projects potentially encompassing multiple renewable technologies is critical for this position. Further, completed work is expected to be published in high-quality journals and conferences. The successful candidate will also follow all Environment, Safety, and Health policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment.
PhD in engineering
Or, Master's Degree in engineering and 3 or more years of experience related to the job description
Or, Bachelor's Degree in engineering and 5 or more years of experience related to the job description
Must be a recent Ph.D. graduate in electrical engineering (or similar) within the last three years.
Recent postdoc experience with a focus on applied research
Advanced knowledge and experience with high-fidelity dynamic modeling
Advanced knowledge of power system operations and modeling needs
Prior experience with DOE EERE technology offices (SETO, WETO, etc.)
Prior experience working with utilities or non-DOE clients
Experience modeling grid forming inverter controls
Existing track record of high-quality publications
Excellent writing and communications skills
Ability to present technical results to a wide audience
Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
