Job Description

Seeking a full-time experienced electrical and mechanical technician to provide expert support to water power, and other renewable technologies. Position entails the design, construction, installation, operation, and demobilization of instrumentation systems on a variety of test subjects from subcomponents to utility-scale devices. Extensive working knowledge of sensors (pressure, temperature, strain, etc), instrumentation (metocean), data acquisition systems (National Instruments cRIO, SCADA), and their wiring is required. Additionally, applicant should have a firm understanding of electrical power systems, including PTOs, multi-phase AC, and power component specification. The successful candidate will be expected to produce exceptional quality fabrications, installations, and wiring as well as generate high quality documentation, including wiring schematics and system drawings.

This is a hands-on position and the individual will be working in laboratories, test bays, shipyards, and at sea. Working conditions can vary considerably, and the individual will be able to work in adverse environmental conditions, within NREL’s safety thresholds, including strong winds, rough seas, blowing snow, and temperature extremes. Work will also be conducted in confined spaces and at heights in excess of 100 meters. Preference is given to those with knowledge of industrial safety practices and fosters a culture of safety within the workplace and among co-workers. Operation of manlifts, forklifts, pallet jacks, small cranes, and davits will be required and prior experience and certifications (as applicable) are a plus. In addition, applicant should be familiar with the working dynamics in a shipyard and aboard vessels and have or qualify for a TWIC Card. Extensive travel (>25%) is expected for this position.

Basic Qualifications

Associates of Arts or Associate of Science and 12 years experience with Mechanical or Electrical Engineering experience OR 15 years of Electronic or Mechanical Technician experience

Must be able to interact and communicate well with other technicians, engineers, and scientists. Must have a professional and courteous demeanor. Demonstrated ability and experience working efficiently and cooperatively in a cohesive team environment where safety and coordination of activities among all team members is paramount. Frequent use and broad knowledge of related practices, techniques, and standards. Wide-ranging application of theory, concepts, principles and requirements of the discipline or field supported. Advanced skills in research techniques and practices. Excellent communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.
