Job Summary

Responding to increasing market demand for clean energy R&D, NREL is looking to add experienced full-time dedicated Partnership Development Leads to its current Business Development (BD) organization. As part of our BD team, Partnership Development Leads help our partners address their energy challenges by accessing the world-class knowledge, unique capabilities and signature facilities at NREL. Leads work closely with domain experts to solve our partners’ most challenging problems. They work with organizations across a broad industry landscape to analyze the impact of new and constantly evolving energy solutions, conduct research that advances partner technologies, and support deployment of advanced energy solutions.

As part of NREL’s BD team, Partnership Development Leads are directly responsible for managing the activities needed to secure partnership opportunities including relationship building, opportunity qualification, team formulation, partner communication, requirements refinement, solution development, pricing, and statement of work (SOW)/proposal development. A Lead works closely with domain experts from NREL’s Science and Technology (S&T) teams to match NREL capabilities to partner needs. Once the solution is identified, the Lead works with teams from technology transfer, contracting, and finance to negotiate an agreement. After the opportunity is won and an agreement signed, the Lead transitions their knowledge about the partner and project to the project leader and helps the project leader establish strong relationships with the partner. To be successful, NREL Partnership Development Leads cultivate and develop strong, long-term partner relationships with senior executives in key technology organizations in bioenergy, materials, solar, vehicles, buildings, wind energy, energy systems including utilities, and energy executives in federal, state and local governments or government organizations.

This position will work as part of NREL’s corporate business development team and will report to the Associate Lab Director for Innovation, Partnership and Outreach. The dedicated Partnership Development Lead will work as part of a team with Sector and Directorate Partnership Development Managers to accomplish the business development goals of the laboratory. A successful Partnership Development Lead improves/maintains capture win rate through continuous improvement of capture best practices execution, develops strong partner relationships, and is recognized as a key contributor to the BD team.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Identify opportunities by researching industry sources, attending events, tracking prospective markets, customers and competitors

  • Provide qualification recommendations based on DOE mission, NREL and directorate strategies, market impact and financial costs and benefits

  • Develop successful capture strategies

  • Work closely with domain experts to develop compelling solutions that partners are able to easily understand and sell internally

  • Assess and manage ongoing uncertainty (risk) of successful capture

  • Help partners understand how to work and contract with a national lab including supporting their efforts to sell the solution internally

  • Report progress and ensure the accuracy of the opportunity record in the NREL’s CRM system

  • Proactively manage the allocated time of domain experts

Required Skills:

  • Proven history of being able to interpret customer requirements and lead teams toward successful development and delivery of winning solutions

  • Experience managing capture or business development teams

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Exceptional soft skills, including: 1) strong and flexible interpersonal skills, 2) a problem-solving attitude, and 3) the ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team player

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies advanced technical principles, theories and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Develops advanced concepts, techniques and standards. Develops new applications based on professional principles and theories. Viewed externally as subject matter expert in field. Comprehensive and advanced knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Superior leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous business development or project experience in a government or research lab environment

  • Previous experience using CRM solutions
