Job Summary

Primary role of the Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst will be to develop reports and dashboards utilizing enterprise project and financial data. The BI Analyst will work directly with the Financial Analysts, Business Managers, the IT Data Management Team, and lab dashboard users to design, implement and maintain dashboards and reports. The ideal candidate has extensive experience translating raw data and user requirements into useful visualizations and reports. The BI Analyst will cultivate and align with a strong team culture and collaborative environment centered on consistently delivering exceptional performance and outcomes.

Duties shall include:

  • Responsible for the overall design, implementation and maintenance of the Office of the CFO’s (OCFO) reports and dashboards, which includes reports targeted to NREL’s executive team, lab program managers, project managers and project coordinators, and business units.

  • Create ad-hoc reports as requested in a timely and accurate manner to provide actionable data to senior level manager and above both internal and external to the department

  • Responsible for developing and executing test plans to ensure accuracy of data

  • Ensures the use of demonstrated best practices for multiple business intelligence solutions

  • Works directly with the IT Data Management Team including the Database Architect, BI Developer, Database Administrators, and Data Engineers to facilitate Data Hub and integration requirements, troubleshoot data anomalies, and build new functionality/enhancements within the enterprise data architecture

  • Works directly with report authors within the OCFO to ensure synchronization of efforts and provide training and best practice guidance

  • Provides BI analytic guidance to projects and teams, ensuring that new initiatives or enhancements to enterprise business systems enable effective data reporting and display

  • Responsible for turning business requirements into technical requirements through prototyping and requirements documentation

  • Develop improved data visualizations as well as consistent NREL-branding across business intelligence dashboards

  • Support the budgeting and planning process, including variance analysis as well as long term strategic planning

  • Assist in month end and year end close responsibilities

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:

  • Deep understanding of general BI data strategies and solutions utilizing a wide range of products

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common metrics used to measure and monitor operational performance, define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and provide clear and concise communication with a wide audience of internal departments

  • Expert data analytic skills, including expert Excel data modeling techniques (VBA, macros, PowerView, PowerQuery, PowerPivot, etc.)

  • 5 years of hands-on experience with at least one mainstream BI tool (Power BI, OBIEE, Tableau, etc.)

  • 5 years of experience with and a wide base of knowledge of general Data Management principles, methodologies, and frameworks including master data management, data security, data dictionaries, metadata management, data governance and data quality.

  • Expert in building complex visualizations out of raw data with drill-down capabilities

  • Deep subject matter expertise in business processes mapping, solution design, and data analysis in technical/business environments supporting reporting and analytics needs

  • Good understanding of finance and accounting including budget creation, financial reporting and analysis and cash flow planning.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Ability to work well in a cross-organizational team environment

  • Entrepreneurial, self-starter that gets excited about rolling up their sleeves and proactively solving problems


Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
