Job Description

Passionate about a clean energy future and making science relatable, understandable, and memorable to a wide range of audiences? Experienced at juggling several projects at once, creating communications plans and tracking timelines, details, and budgets to move projects forward? Skilled with building relationships to become a trusted partner?

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Communications Office has an opening for a Communications Project Coordinator to communicate NREL’s impact collaborating with industry, government, non-profit, and startup partners. You’ll work closely with a core group of dedicated, creative communicators to develop materials that help NREL tell the stories of its important research and strategic partnerships.

The Communications Professional II position requires the ability to build and manage relationships with ease, and quickly learn and handle a variety of tasks, whether that’s scoping and managing a strategic communications project from beginning to end, coordinating branded merchandise, drafting a social media plan, managing a routine web update, or building a PowerPoint deck for a presentation. We are looking for a self-starter with good judgment and the ability to take initiative and often work autonomously.

The perfect candidate is a self-motivated individual who is familiar with traditional and digital communications strategies, including email marketing, demonstrates attention to detail and quality, and is comfortable interacting directly with research staff and management. Our team works in an agency-like setting, where you’ll help produce content through collaboration with business development professionals, technical minds, project managers, writers, editors, videographers, web specialists, and graphic designers.

Primary Job Functions

Project coordination: Create, track, and manage multiple projects to completion for a variety of multichannel outreach campaigns. Inform other team members on project status and collaborate on day-to-day problem-solving. Oversee and execute plans including organizing event materials and logistics, collaborating with designers to develop or update graphics, coordinating with experts on web content, and more.

Relationships: Build and maintain positive relationships with teams, peers, and clients. Find innovative solutions and act as a strategic partner.

  • Professional II Communications Coordinator will serve as a communications representative—for two-to-three projects, programs, or offices—working closely with senior communicators.

Content: Develop and edit reports, email, web, PowerPoint presentations, and social media, and other program and outreach content following established standards and best practices and adhering to style guide(s). Coordinate with contributors to steward content and products through multiple reviews and approvals.

Internal Communications: Utilize internal communications methods and channels to help team and clients spread the word to NREL’s growing staff about various partnerships related information.

Events: Support event and manage logistics for communications products (booths, signage, handouts, etc.) needed for in-person (or virtual) events.

The NREL Communications Office comprises communications experts in a variety of disciplines focused on raising awareness about the lab and DOE programs. This position resides in the Communications Office’s Corporate Communications Group, which includes the media team, employee communications, and events and visits team.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. General knowledge and application of technical standards, principles, theories and techniques. Frequent application of industry concepts and principles. General knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Skilled in problem solving, written and verbal communication. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience professionally in communications

  • Experience working collaboratively and solving problems with teams and clients

  • Demonstrated experience with digital communications and application of marketing concepts and practices

  • Experience writing and/or editing stories and presenting scientific and technical content in plain language

  • Experience writing/editing web and/or social media content

  • Experience following corporate branding standards and building PowerPoint Presentations, following templates

  • Experience with project management and collaboration platforms, such as Microsoft Teams

  • Strong writing skills to communicate effectively through internal and external channels including email, web, social media, and outreach/educational materials

  • Experience coordinating and hosting virtual meetings

  • Ability to work under guidance to complete moderately complex communications assignments including research, writing, and editing for a variety of products

  • Adhere to budgets and schedules to meet deadlines for deadline-oriented projects

  • Ability to work on campus 2-3 days or more per week in a hybrid work arrangement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous science-, energy-sector, government-, technology-, or research-related communications experience

  • Experience adhering to an in-house style guide, AP style, and/or Chicago style

  • Experience with project management and collaboration platforms, such as Microsoft Teams and ClickUp

  • Prior roles in a communication/public relations/advertising agency or similar corporate/organization department

  • Familiarity with renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, and/or other technical subject matter.

  • Familiarity with Salesforce platform

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Professional II / Annual Salary Range: $63,600 - $104,900

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
