NREL is seeking an engineering project manager to provide technical support for airport and port related projects and concurrently manage project teams and clients. The new team member may initially lead a project team and provide technical support to develop comprehensive, resilient, and sustainable energy strategies for ports and airports.
The new team member should be able to support and lead teams covering energy efficiency (EE), renewable energy (RE) generation, energy storage, ground transportation, demand response, efficient water systems, and energy systems integration to optimize energy performance, reduce costs, and to improve operational resiliency.
The new team member may conduct and support engineering analysis using software tools to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of renewable energy, energy efficiency, storage, and conventional generation for ports, airports, military installations, buildings, communities, and campuses. Responsibilities may include performing site assessments, collecting field data, performing engineering studies and calculations and advising clients on best practices for implementing technologies to achieve greater energy resiliency and cost savings.
The new team member may generate and/or support conceptual designs, specifications, and conduct design reviews for project designs. Strong candidates will have experience developing renewable and fossil-fuel energy projects with a focus on microgrids and energy resiliency.
The team member will join the Integrated Applications Center (IAC) within the Energy Systems Integration (ESI) directorate. The IAC helps public and private sector organizations meet their energy and resiliency goals by analyzing project opportunities, developing energy strategies, and implementing a diverse project portfolio of integrated energy efficiency (EE) measures, distributed energy resources, and grid integration technologies.
The position requires a skilled professional who applies, on a broad basis, existing theories, principles, and concepts, and is fully competent in conventional applications of energy systems science and engineering. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership in several areas of team, task or project leader responsibilities and demonstrated experience in management of projects. The candidate may lead and/or contribute to the production of materials for technical products, technical reports, documents, presentations, and concept papers, conference papers, journal articles, and shall have the ability to present findings at national technical meetings. The position will require the team member to balance and complete multiple milestones for a variety of project and/or specific programmatic objectives.
Related Engineering PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent related engineering experience. Or, related Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent related engineering experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree in any engineering and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent related engineering experience.
Project management experience
Understanding of airport and/or port construction, operations, and maintenance
Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams (e.g. electrical, mechanical, vehicle, building, etc)
Experience presenting to clients, partners, and at conferences
Knowledge of industry applicable policies, trends, and influences
Experience managing clients, subcontractors, or project team members
Proficient with Microsoft office suite and/or other applicable software tools
Knowledge of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies
Expert understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices and standards
Expert knowledge of technical field and related disciplines
Exhibits an exceptional degree of ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness
Outstanding interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and communication skills
Experience in design, management and/or implementation of real-world engineering projects
Electrical engineering education and experience
5+ years of project management experience, managing projects according to budget, scope, and schedule
Direct experience working on airports and/or ports projects
Direct industry contacts to facilitate future collaborations on ports and airports projects
Experience with strategic planning to identify new opportunities to support airports and ports
Knowledge of economics, finance, cash flow analysis
Exceptional writing skills, and proven organization skills
Experience with working with diverse stakeholders on energy related issues
Excellent communication and teamwork skills;
Enjoys group problem solving and technical discussions
Ability to collaborate with team members in a flexible work environment
Ability to work independently
