Job Description

At NREL, we work collaboratively with a team of designers, clients, and subject matter experts to pitch new work and implement it across all channels. Our Communications and Public Affairs Office is seeking a Graphic/Visual Designer to join the Graphic Design/Multimedia team.

  • Under minimal guidance, the candidate will work on design and production of communication products for both electronic and print media.

  • Working as part of project team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, the Graphic/Visual Designer will analyze customer requirements and propose innovative solutions based on sound design principles and corporate branding guidelines.

  • Our Graphic/Visual Designers are strategic thinkers and continuous learners who enjoy turning complex challenges into simple, elegant solutions.

  • If you like using typography, color, and space to translate high-level requirements into engaging user experiences, this job may be for you.

  • We’ll ask you to manage your own schedules and deadlines and balance priorities and tasks.

  • You’ll track your time and bill to specific projects.

  • We’re looking for a highly motivated individual who likes to experiment and take risks.

  • Someone who is comfortable working with minimal supervision—and just as comfortable actively participating on a team to determine the best approach to our latest communication challenge.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Additional Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual arts, or other related discipline, or equivalent. Five or more years of relevant graphic design experience.

  • Demonstrated skills and experience with Adobe Creative Suite design tools on a Macintosh computer platform; specifically, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.

  • Ability to learn other computer software programs as required.

  • Outstanding working knowledge of visual design with a solid background in design fundamentals, such as design thinking, typography, color, composition, and hierarchy.

  • General knowledge of other related disciplines.

  • Leadership, project management, and problem-solving skills.

  • Adept at crafting visual elements that can be extensible across media and work holistically with brand standards and style guides.

  • Current knowledge of web trends, techniques, and technologies.

  • Detail-oriented and resourceful with excellent follow through.

  • Expert knowledge of PowerPoint.

  • Possess advanced knowledge of MS Office applications.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Candidates must have an online portfolio to be considered.

  • General knowledge and application of technical standards, principles, theories and techniques.

  • Frequent application of industry concepts and principles.

  • General knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field.

  • Skilled in problem solving, written and verbal communication.

  • Ability to use various computer software programs.
