Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The National Bioenergy Center at NREL has an opening for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher. This position supports the National Bioenergy Center’s mission to develop biomass conversion processes focusing on the chemical and mechanical treatment of lignocellulosic biomass for production of renewable fuels and chemicals. The researcher will execute experiments, analyze data, develop chemical reaction and transport phenomena models, investigate mechanical milling and refining systems, and design and implement computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models of these systems. The research will focus on dynamic changes in material physical properties and chemical reactivity during processing.

Primary duties include:

  • Design and execute bench-scale experiments on biomass feedstocks such as wood chips or herbaceous materials to study transport phenomena and chemical kinetics of the systems using a packed-bed column reactor or similar.

  • Define, develop, and verify CDF simulations of flow through various reactor systems.

  • Analyze results from pilot-scale mechanical comminution experiments of various biomass feedstocks focusing on the impact of particle size reduction and surface characteristic changes on process performance.

Basic Qualifications

Must be a recent PhD in Chemical Engineering having graduated within the last three years.

Additional Qualifications

Demonstrated experience with hands-on experimental systems, physical process separations, chemical kinetics, and CFD modeling. Must be able to effectively communicate scientific results, both written and oral, and can work effectively in a large, multidisciplinary team of engineers, chemists, and technicians.

Strong publication record. Experience with modeling industrial or pilot-scale process in the petrochemical, pulp and paper, or food-processing industries. Other preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience in developing reactor simulations that include both multiphase flow and chemical reaction kinetics.

  • Familiarity with modeling of flow through porous media, e.g. packed chip bed fluid dynamics.

  • Fluency in computer programming languages including Python, R, or C.

  • Familiarity with automated instrumentation and data acquisition systems.

  • Excellent technical writing, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and in teams.

  • Dedicated to a safe and clean work environment.
