Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The Water Power Deployment and Commercialization group within the Energy Conversion and Storage Systems (ECaSS) Center works on alleviating market barriers and enabling commercialization for marine energy and hydropower systems. Staff in Water Power Deployment and Commercialization have broad expertise in policy and regulatory analysis, STEM and workforce development, stakeholder engagement, and industry network development.
Water Power Deployment and Commercialization is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented intern to support stakeholder engagement activities for Puerto Rico’s Grid Deployment Office (GDO) work at NREL. The successful candidate will work closely with our team to ensure inclusive participation from local stakeholders in Puerto Rico.
This position will support a project dedicated to fostering collaboration and inclusivity in Puerto Rico's energy transition. The project engages stakeholders from various sectors to collect input and feedback on ongoing energy recovery and resilience technical assistance initiatives. As a team, we ensure comprehensive engagement, communication, and adaptation to stakeholders' needs.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in maintaining and convening of an Advisory Group consisting of Puerto Rico stakeholders across community organizations, non-profits, academia, private sector, and government.
Support in managing communication channels to disseminate project updates, resources, and collect feedback with the Advisory Group and relevant stakeholders.
Draft and distribute newsletters, emails, and other communication materials.
Monitor feedback and engage stakeholders in dialogue to address concerns and solicit input.
Contribute to ensuring inclusive and meaningful participation by identifying gaps and recommending strategies for improvement.
Assist in conducting a comprehensive stakeholder landscape analysis to inform energy transition efforts.
Facilitate the process for monitoring press coverage related to our portfolio activities, stakeholders, and relevant energy transition developments.
Aid in compiling research findings and presenting them clearly and concisely.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bilingual (Spanish/English) to read, write, and speak.
Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information.
Excellent written and verbal communication skill in both Spanish and English.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Interest in energy transition, sustainability, and stakeholder engagement, particularly in the context of Puerto Rico.

Basic Qualifications
Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications
Fluent speaking, reading, and writing skills in Spanish.

Preferred Qualifications
Urban and Regional Planning, Communications or Social Sciences background/study.
Ideal candidate should have a strong aptitude to learn and communicate information about land use and energy planning.
Previous experience working within the Puerto Rican context is a plus.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $42,700 - $68,300
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
Benefits Summary
Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
