The Complex Systems Simulation and Optimization Group in the NREL Computational Science Center has an opening for a full-time postdoctoral researcher in Exascale computing and co-simulation in support of renewable energy systems research. Emphasis is placed on the construction and solution of co-simulated systems, stochastic systems and optimization problems for modelling large power grids. We are looking for a dynamic, motivated researcher with a strong technical background and an interest in the mission of NREL.
The successful candidate will collaborate with NREL staff and researchers, other national labs, and universities on efforts to develop co-simulation and optimization software and workflows in support of research and development activities in grid modernization, science, engineering, energy analysis, and optimization. Enabling NREL and its collaborators to fully utilize DOE Exascale computing systems and NREL's HPC systems for research and development activities is paramount to addressing national goals for utilization of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.
Collaborate with NREL and research partners to design, implement, and carry out large power grid simulations that depend on the construction and solution of linear and non-linear complex, coupled and stochastic systems. Included in this effort will be the implementation and execution of workflows on HPC systems.
Author, present, and assist in the preparation of technical papers, reports and conference proceedings on topics related to distributed computed and co-simulation workflows for power grid simulations on HPC systems.
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
A strong background in scalable algorithm development and implementation for scientific and engineering applications. Strong analytical skills and programming experience. Demonstrated expertise in the advanced modeling and simulation of complex systems. Experience using and/or developing agent-based modeling framework.
Demonstrated expert skill at developing parallel programs using both shared memory and distributed memory mechanisms for various processor architectures. Experience with resource optimization solvers, decision-support systems, and multi-scale energy systems. Experience with programming languages like C++, Python, and MATLAB is preferred. Familiarity with cyber-physical-system and communication-network simulations a plus.
