The Power System Engineering Center (PSEC) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is inviting applications for a senior research position to work on government and industry sponsored research in the area of power and energy systems. Specific expertise in dynamic and transient modeling, Power-Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL), Controller-Hardware-In-the-Loop (CHIL), steady state assessment, and real-time simulations is required. Multi-domain co-simulation expertise for power systems, electrified transportation, communications, hydropower, thermal systems, etc. is needed. The researcher should also have significant experience in the broad area of transient and dynamic modeling of power systems using real-time tools (RTDS, Opal RT, Typhoon HIL, etc.) and non-real-time tools (PSCAD, DigSilent, PSLF, etc.). The researcher should have substantial experience of real-time simulations, PHIL, and CHIL of novel technologies for grid integration with transmission, distribution, microgrids, etc. Experience in establishing a research facility/lab and managing early-career researchers to meet technical targets that solve relevant and cutting-edge challenges is a must.
Ph.D. in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and 7 years or more experience,
Or, master’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical and 10 or more years of experience.
Or, relevant bachelor’s degree and 13 or more years of experience.
Additional Required Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
Ph.D. degree in the field of power systems and renewable energy
Experience in transient and dynamic modeling of power systems, hydropower, inverter-based renewable energy, and other relevant technologies
Experience in real-time simulations, hardware-in-the-loop, controller-hardware-in-the-loop, co-simulation of multi-domain systems such as electrical, thermal, communications, mechanical, controls, etc.
Experience in distributed real-time simulations with working knowledge of latency mitigation techniques
Experience in assessing grid modernization methodologies from early stage R&D to deployment
Experience in modeling and practical functioning of renewable energy technologies including wind, solar, and hydropower
Experience in electrified transportation sectors including smart charge management of electric vehicles and high-power charging (> 350 kW for light duty and 1+ MW for heavy duty)
Experience in grid integration of energy storage systems, hydrogen electrolyzers, electric vehicles, buildings, etc. is highly desirable
Knowledge of relevant IEEE, IEC, SAE, etc. standards including in the field of power systems and electrified transportation
Knowledge of electricity market operation
Excellent publication track record demonstrating ability to conduct high-quality research and must be well recognized in relevant technical communities such as IEEE, SAE, ASME, etc.
Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Work independently to investigate and/or conduct, test, and document research and experiments
Provide reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations
Publish results in technical journals and conference proceedings
Present work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings, effective in person and virtually
Work with management and staff to develop funding in the power systems and transportation related research areas
