Job Description

NREL is seeking a nationally recognized expert to advance the state of the art in photovoltaic cell and module performance characterization, analysis, and standards, working within NREL’s Photovoltaic Cell and Module Performance (CMP) group. This world-renowned group has pioneered many of the techniques for PV performance characterization that are now standardized across the globe. The team continues to advance the state of the art in PV performance measurement, driving down measurement uncertainties in the calibration of PV primary reference cells, secondary reference cells, and secondary reference modules.

This position provides the technological leadership to continue to develop the CMP group’s capabilities, responding to the rapidly evolving needs of the PV industry and research community including emerging PV technologies and applications. The ideal candidate will develop and enhance technical capabilities relevant to advancing PV performance measurements; ensure timely, accurate, and reliable PV performance measurements; disseminate knowledge to PV community; support international standards, and develop new business opportunities and directions for the Group. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Develop advances in the state of the cell and module measurement field to adapt to the evolving needs of the PV industry, including techniques for measuring new and emerging PV technologies.

  • Present these advances at national and international PV conferences, and publish these advances in refereed journals.

  • Update formal uncertainty analyses for existing PV measurement tools, testbeds, and techniques; and develop new uncertainty analysis for new tools, testbeds, and techniques.

  • Build new competencies to attract new research and development opportunities.

  • Engage with the PV industry and stay current with market trends.

Basic Qualifications

PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field and 9 or more years of experience in the PV field .

Or, relevant Master's Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field and 12 or more years of experience in the PV field.

Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field and 14 or more years of experience in the PV field.

Additional Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in physics, electrical engineering, or other relevant discipline.

  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of the issues and best practices in PV device performance measurements.

  • Strong record of publications in the PV device performance measurement field.

  • Extensive knowledge of semiconductor device physics, and optics with emphasis on the PV device performance implications of these fields.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop new PV measurement tools and techniques, including a high level of skill and experience in LabView and/or Python programming and electronic instrumentation development for data acquisition and hardware control.

  • Track record of developing uncertainty analyses for PV measurements, including mastery of the uncertainty analysis methodology described in the Guide to Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM; JCGM 100:2008).

  • Excellent project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in the development of IEC and/or ASTM standards for the measurement of photovoltaic devices, including participation in standards committees.

Demonstrated ability to develop new program areas, including writing winning proposals, and leading the resulting projects.
