The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is leading a transformation of the national energy system through research and development in renewable energy generation and energy systems integration. NREL’s Cyber-Physical Systems Security Group within the Energy Security and Resilience Center is seeking a Software Developer for Energy Systems Cybersecurity Visualization. A background in application development, full-stack web applications, and experience with 3D development platforms is required to develop toolsets that support research in vulnerability analysis and mitigation to secure energy communication and control systems from cyberattacks. NREL works directly with the electric utility sector, the renewable energy generation sector, energy and security technology vendors and integrators, the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and other federal agencies with missions critical to the nation’s energy security interests. This position requires a depth of knowledge in software development techniques and the ability to collaborate with professionals of varied skillsets to manufacture focused and creative solutions to the groups research needs.

Internet of Things, Electric Vehicle Systems, Home Energy Management Systems, and smart home controllable device cybersecurity
Natural and human energy system threat modeling and risk quantification
Vulnerability and mitigation assessments throughout the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (Identify, protect, detect, respond and recover)
Integrated power and communication emulation with virtualization and hardware-in-the-loop
Human cognitive science around power and communication system visualization
This candidate must have:
4 - 5 years of experience building web applications or Bachelors in CS
2+ years’ experience with C# or Java
Experience with front end frameworks (React, VueJS, Angular, etc.)
Experience using back end frameworks (.NET, Express, Spring)
Experience interacting with SQL databases or OO databases (MongoDB)
Experience with 3D development platforms (Unity 3D)
Basic grasp of HTML & CSS
Firm understanding of github & git flow
Firm understanding of test driven development
Firm understanding of object-oriented programming
Some understanding of database organization
Some understanding of networking protocols
Some understanding of design concepts
Master's Degree in engineering.
Or, Bachelor's Degree in engineering and 2 or more years of experience related to the job description.
