Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The NREL mission is to develop renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and practices, advance related science and engineering, and transfer knowledge and innovation to address the nation’s energy and environmental goals.

A research scientist position is available in the Materials Science Center at NREL in the area of surface and interfacial characterization of materials for renewable and sustainable energy technologies. This position will support projects led by NREL staff scientists on technologies including primarily photovoltaics and next-generation batteries. Specific duties will include acquisition and analysis of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) data sets; general maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment and facilities; and design, development and application of novel measurement protocols and methodologies.


Basic Qualifications

Master's Degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or a related field.

Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or a related field and 2 or more years of experience in research-oriented position(s) at a national laboratory, university, or industrial setting.

  • B.S. or M.S. degree(s) in physics, chemistry, materials science or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with surface characterization techniques such as XPS and AES.

  • Working knowledge of ultra-high vacuum instrumentation and practices.

  • Programming experience with Igor, LabVIEW, MATLAB and/or other relevant scientific and technical software packages.

  • Experience in materials or device research for renewable-energy applications.
